I am getting a new computer. Can I save a backup in the free edition to transfer to the new computer?

I am using Access Manager 1.3.

If not in version 1.3, can I get my database from 1.3 into version 2 & use version 2 for generating a backup which can be transferred to new computer.

Thanks for help.

You can easily move your AM 1.3 passwords to a new computer. Make a copy of the AM.dat file, then install AM 1.3 on to your new PC and copy the AM.dat file into the installation folder.

You can also do the same with version 2.0. The file to backup is AccessManager.xdb.

That's what I thought, but when I open AM.dat, the file is empty. Is that how it should be?

Also, how does one upgrade from AM1.3 to AM 2 while preserving the password database? I had tried upgrading, but my passwords were not preserved!

John,

If your AM.dat file is empty then maybe you didn't make of copy of the correct original file or you didn't restore it to the correct location.

When I said the AM.dat file was empty, I was referring to the original!!
Thus I was suspect about copying an empty file. The fact that it is empty is very strange since the program works OK & contains many password & user names!!

WHAT GIVES??? Thanks for any help.

John,

I'm not sure I fully understand your question. Just copy the AM.dat file that you backed up from your working installation of AM 1.3 to your new installation of AM 1.3.

In order to move the passwords to a new computer, I was told to copy the AM.dat file & place it in the folder for AM 1.3 on the new computer.

However, I made the observation that the ORIGINAL AM.dat file on my current computer is empty if I open the file in NotePad. This would appear to make no sense to me unless the contents of the file are hidden in some way.
Please explain. Thanks.

The contents of the AM.dat file are encrypted. You will not see any meaningfull data with a text editor. One of the main purposes of Access Manager is to securely store passwords.

I don't feel comfortable sending out these files. As long as everything works, I just won't worry about it. If I have any trouble transferring to a new computer, I'll repost. Thanks for your help.

No problem John,

If you view encrypted data with a text editor, you may not see much. This is because a text editor expects text and encrypted data is not text.

Above, you said to "copy the AM.dat file into the installation folder."

Just so I am straight on this, to back up or re-install your data, you should copy the AM.dat file from the Program folder;

ie = C:\Program Files\Access Manager\AM.dat

Then when you have installed on a new computer or re-installed on the same computer you paste the saved AM.dat file into the;

C:\Program Files\Access Manager\ ....... folder ...... Correct?

Thanks,
Mike C
