|
|
I am thinking of buying a new laptop and thinking of making it 64 bit. Apparently I have to find out if every program I use will be compatible.
So, Is Access Manager compatible with 64 bit (Vista I guess)?
Thank you |

| Unfortunately, Access Manager is not available for 64bit versions of Windows. We do intend develop a 64bit version but we don't have a timetable yet. |

Given this information does anyone know of a way to run AM on a 64 bit box other than installing Virtual Box and running a copy of Windows 7 32 bit plus AM there?

| Will AM run on Windows 7 Professional 64 bit if you use the XP Mode feature? |

Just experimented with AM on W7 64bit and not managed to get working at all.
THIS IS SERIOUS
I really really don't want to change my password manager - it is one of my most frequent used applications. Howver 64 bit apps becoming much more common with some (eg photoshop CS4) almost assuming you have 64 bit for the extra memory.
PLEASE produce 64bit version ASAP and if necessary I would happily pay again

We do intend to produce a 64bit verison of AM. Unfortunately, part of the encryption sub-system is not suitable for 64bit upgrading. Essentially, this means it is not possible to make a 64bit version and keep it compatible with the current version. We are still looking at the options for maintaining as much backwards compatibility as possible.
We are also looking at ways to use the current version of AM with Vista 64bit. |

| Thanks for prompt reply - does this mean a 64bit version is possible but with a 'one way' coversion of the current database? I would have no problem with that as once moved to 64bit I would be unlikely to return. A one way conversion would also work with 2 systems 1x32 and 1x 64 - providing the 32bit was the retained as the updatable copy, and the 64bit regarded as a 'read only' version. Routine exports 32>64 is not that big a deal - certainly not as much as exporting all data to a new app - I just like AM with its authentication and password selection fuctions - must have saved me hours over the years! |

At the moment it means that there is no conversion of the database. There is no backwards compatibility.
If you have Windows 7 Professional 64bit or Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit you can install Access Manager in ‘Windows XP Mode’. See http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx for more info. |

| I upgraded my Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit to Windows 7 Professional 64bit (for 90 bucks) and installed Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode. Then I installed Access Manager 2 from the website into the XP Mode and copied my AccessManager.xdb file from a USB drive. I closed XP Mode to hibernate and from the Start menu All Programs in Windows 7 I selected AM from Virtual PC, XP Mode and drug it to the Task Bar. Works like a charm! Thank you for suggesting this solution. I am delighted to finally again have access to my 500+ entries from Access Manager running on my Windows 7 64bit machine! |

| Thanks Phil for providing the details. Have you found any problems with Drag & Drop from AM to other programs? |

There are some more details in the FAQ at www.AccessManager.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?t=887
If anyone wants to share their problems or successes with Windows 64-bit, please post them here and we will update the FAQ. |

I am able to drag and drop from Access Manager to other programs on Windows 7 with no problem. It works great!
One caveat on the XP Mode solution... Be sure you check your system before you upgrade to Windows 7 Professional. To run Windows Virtual PC you must have a processor chip capable of hardware virtualization with Intel-VT or AMD-V turned on, an additional 1GB of RAM and 15GB of available disk space. Download and run the Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool to check your hardware.
By first carefully reading all the instructions and checking my hardware, my installation went very smoothly. The Win7 Home Premium to Win7 Professional upgrade took about 10 minutes. Downloading the free XP Mode software took an hour and a half. Virtual PC download took a couple minutes. Copying AM and the .xdb file to XP Mode was simple.
I am dependent on AM remembering all kinds of numbers for me and I use it many times a day; so the time and expense of this upgrade was well worth it to me.

I tried various options for W7 x64 and not having professional the xp emulator option is not available. As I need VMware for work I have installed accessmanger on an XP VM and it works but boy is it clumsy compared with native. Not nearly as elegant as Philfrisk's XP solution but it is available.
PLEASE build a 64 bit version ASAP . One way tranfer - even using export to comma separated or other option for is preferable to VMware (great as it is it is not a long term practical solution

| I also am having a problem with AM and a 64 bit system. I have years of data in AM and don't want to transfer to another manager. Why could not a person import into a 64 bit version using an xml export file from the 32 bit version? Would an import routine be that hard to write in 64 bit? I'm sorry to say I am looking at replacing AM, if I can find one that will import the data base. I might just have to do that by hand. I hate to do this as I have used this program for years and would be willing to pay an upgrade price if I can only stay with AM and us it on my 64 bit machines. It seems with the Windows 7 release more and more people are moving to 64 bit. |

We hope to work on the 64-bit version a bit more when the new Microsoft development tools are launched – maybe in April. Unfortunately, it is not as simple an import/export option as one of the sub-systems in Access Manager was designed for 32-bit only and will need to be replaced.
